CWD advisory
With CWD in multiple counties in North Carolina, baiting will become be illegal if they follow the protocal of what other states have done . Many hunters have depended on baiting to fill their freezers. Outfitters bait to provide an opportunity for greater success to their clients. The alternative is to provide food naturally through planting trees and food plots, but this requires planning ahead.
Trees: Planting a variety of nut and fruit trees that produce at different times of the summer and fall is the best way to attract the deer and keep them there. Big Bucks like saftey and the best food sources around. Trees such as the Saw Tooth Oak are best for hunters. They can start producing acorns as soon as 4 years and produce 1000 lbs by year 10!
Food plots require more work, human presence and therefore more scent. In short, they can be more problemacic if you are not on top of your game, and especially if there is a drought. However, they are an essential part of habitat development and are wellworth the investment of time and energy. I rate them at a close 2nd place behind trees. Knowing where the trees should be planted in relation to a food plot, bedding areas, other food sources, entry points and wind direction is important for your success.
